• Organized a series of statewide workshops (including in-person and first-ever synchronous/asynchronous virtual events). Recruited speakers, managed event logistics, collaborated with partner organizations, and oversaw publicity.
• Maintained association’s website, wrote press releases, and developed code to power advanced submission forms.
• Partnered with regional and national stakeholders on planning committee for Nationall High School Journalism Convention.

• Developed a WordPress-based content distribution platform in partnership with a multimedia producer. Optimized user experience by creating plugins to integrate the platform with a pre-existing e-commerce website. Trained colleagues in long-term operation of the platform.
• Rebuilt public-facing departmental website in Drupal as part of school-wide overhaul project. Collaborated with multiple leaders to surface their teams’ work, develop overall messaging, and improve organization of information.
• Created and implemented an asset management database to improve the team’s media licensing workflow.
• Recommended and implemented strategies to expand the reach of case-based pedagogy via market research, analysis of internal trends, and search engine optimization. Created, edited and/or oversaw production of infographics and reports to inform team decisions and increase engagement with faculty and staff.
• Contributed research, writing, and graphics to a case study taught in a graduate course on social/political action.
• Ensured delivery of high-quality curricular materials to University faculty through user-interface testing and proof-reading of digital learning projects.

• Provided hands-on training and guidance to student journalists whose work collectively earned four Silver Crowns and three Pacemaker Finalist recognitions as well as several All American, All Columbian, and state championship ratings. (Two Crowns and one Pacemaker Finalist were earned for editions produced during leave of absence.)
• Coached student leaders on handling controversial issues, community feedback, and interaction with the school administration while maintaining their first amendment rights and editorial control of publication content.
• Introduced social media outreach and reporting into the newspaper and yearbook curricula.
• Transformed the newspaper to a real-time, hybrid print/digital publication by creating and then training students to use a modern, Drupal-based news website. After reevaluating student needs, implemented a second transition, this time to a self-managed WordPress system.
• Created and oversaw marketing/recruiting campaigns including flyers, e-mail blasts, websites, and social media engagement, resulting in annual yearbook revenue of approx. $80,000 and staffs frequently exceeding 20 students.
• Developed and deployed a custom web application for managing and checking out photography equipment.
• Managed deadlines, finances, and student motivation such that both publications remained consistently on-time, self-sufficient and profitable, allowing for substantial investment in equipment updates and improved print products.
• Developed relationships with publishing houses, photographers, equipment suppliers, and other vendors.
• Used, integrated, and taught technology including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, FileMaker Pro, and WordPress to develop and maintain processes and procedures for design, bookkeeping, scheduling, grading, planning, etc.
• Served as a member of the board for the Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers (VAJTA) and was a member of the Local Planning Committee for the Fall 2014 and Fall 2019 National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C. Helped organize and market local workshops arranged by VAJTA and volunteered as a judge in Write-Off competitions at these events.

• As part of an Instructional Transformation Team, helped develop policies, procedures, and training to ensure an enhanced culture of collaboration and student-centered learning as school transitioned to one-laptop-per-child model.
• Trained colleagues as the department point-person for adopting a new online Student Information System.
• Created strategy for transitioning the English 10 Honors grading policy to a modern, standards-based system while also leading the effort to redesign the curriculum to better align with 11th/12th grade International Baccalaureate program.
• Mentored colleagues including a student teaching intern, several staff members new to the school, and a first-year teacher.
• Managed a successful intervention program targeting 11th grade students at risk of failing the state “Standards of Learning” assessment.

• Set and tracked team goals and ensured alignment with the building-wide School Improvement Plan.
• Laid the groundwork for transitioning to a standards-based grading and assessment system.
• Led the team’s effort to redesign and refocus the curriculum to better align with the standards and expectations of the 11^th/12^th grade International Baccalaureate program.

The CJE credential certifies educators’ understanding of the fundamentals of journalism and media advising. The certification process verifies educators’ knowledge of such topics as  journalistic writing and editing, graphics and design, and legal/ethical considerations. JEA executive director Kelly Furnas noted in a letter of commendation that the achievement recognizes a “commitment to quality education for media students.”
